April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month Sexual Assault is a difficult and uncomfortable subject to address, but it is imperative that we do. According to national statistics, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 11 men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. This means that in San Luis Obispo County, over 42,000 women and over 11,000 men will be victims of this crime. Last year there were 118 sexual assaults reported to law enforcement in our county. But according to national statistics, only 11% of rapes are reported to police. This means that there were approximately 630 assaults that were NOT reported. Sexual Assault Awareness Month is an opportunity to talk about the reasons why rape is so underreported, and what can be done about it. This month is about honoring survivors, whether they have told their story or not. It's about raising awareness and destroying myths that make it difficult for survivors and their significant others to talk about their experiences. It’s about inviting everyone to join in the effort to end what the American Medical Association has called the "silent, violent epidemic." The SARP Center (formerly Rape Crisis Center) has been serving San Luis Obispo County since 1976, providing crisis intervention services, clinical counseling, prevention education and self defense classes to survivors, their significant others and the community.
