Facts About Sexual Assault
In 2005, more than a third (36%) of all sexual assault occurred at or in a victim's home. (1)
Of female sexual assault victims, 73% were assaulted by someone they knew. (2)
Ninety-two percent of rape or sexual assault victims in 2005 were female. (3)
In 2005, 38.3% of all rapes and sexual assaults were reported to law enforcement. (4)
Of the women who knew the offender, 38% were friends or acquaintances of the rapist and 28% were intimate partners. (5)
Girls age 16-19 are four times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault. (6)
Victims of sexual assault are:
3 times more likely to suffer from depression
6 times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorders
14 times more likely to abuse alcohol
26 more times likely to abuse drugs
4 times more likely to contemplate suicide (7)
One out of every six American women have been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime (14.8% completed rape; 2.8% attempted rape) (8)
About 1 in 33 men have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. (9)
80% of sexual assault victims are under the age of 30. (10)
It is estimated that every two minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. (11)

In the 2003-2004 school year, 13% of all public schools experienced one or more serious violent crimes such as rape or sexual assault. (12)
61% of sexual assaults are not reported to the police. Factoring in unreported rapes, only about 6% of rapists serve a day in jail. (13)
43% of rapes occur between 6:00 pm and midnight. (14)
A victim of sexual assault has a legal right to have an advocate present during an interview with law enforcement. (15)
