If You or a Friend is Sexually Assaulted…

FIND SAFETY — Get to a place that feels physically and emotionally safe.

GET SUPPORT — There are trained, supportive people available 24 hours a day to speak with you about support and choices. Call 805-545-8888 or 1-800-656-HOPE.

PRESERVE EVIDENCE — If you decide to report the assault to law enforcement, evidence needs to be collected. It is important not to shower, bathe, douche, or change clothing. An interview and SART (Suspected Abuse Response Team) medical exam are done by caring professionals trained to be responsive to the needs of survivors. The physical exam, which is similar to a gynecological exam, would be done within 72 hours of the assault. The exam can detect distinct physical evidence of assault that is not present with consensual sex.

GET HEALTH CARE — If you do not have a SART exam, it is important to seek medical attention to assess for possible injuries and be tested for pregnancy & sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. You may also obtain information regarding emergency contraception.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

— Margaret Mead
